Mystical Dragonfly Brooch
Art Nouveau Antique | 18K Gold, Silver, Sapphires, Emeralds & Rose-Cut Diamonds
Like a fleeting dream caught mid-flight, this one-of-a-kind Art Nouveau dragonfly brooch shimmers with magic, mystery, and exquisite craftsmanship. Made around the turn of the 20th century, this breathtaking piece is a love letter to nature. Soaring with romance, symbolism, and the artistic ideals of the era.
Measuring 5cm x 5cm (approximately 2 inches square), the dragonfly spreads its finely detailed wings in full splendor. The entire surface of the brooch, from the delicate wing tips to the curling tail, is paved in glittering rose-cut diamonds, catching the light like morning dew on gossamer wings. Each of the four wings is adorned with a richly colored sapphire cabochon, echoing the two larger oval sapphires that run down the insect’s lithe body. Its vivid emerald cabochon eyes lend it an alert, almost lifelike presence, while four sculpted solid 18K gold legs, with their intricate lifelike texture, anchor it in the realm of the real.
Each gemstone is cradled in thick, warm 18K gold bezels, contrasting elegantly with the darkened silver of the dragonfly’s form. The craftsmanship is simply extraordinary. This isn’t merely jewelry, but art in motion. Finished with a traditional trombone clasp, the brooch weighs a luxurious 15 grams.
Symbolism & History
In jewelry, the dragonfly symbolizes transformation, light, and the ephemeral beauty of life, making it a favorite motif for those who seek deeper meaning in adornment. During the Art Nouveau period (circa 1890–1910), designers like René Lalique and Georges Fouquet turned to nature for inspiration, embracing sinuous lines, mythical creatures, and ethereal forms. Dragonflies, with their delicate anatomy and elusive flight, embodied the spirit of this artistic movement perfectly—blurring the line between imagination and nature.
